Captain’s Day On The Way

Joe Farrell and Ann Mullins are busy preparing for their Captain’s Day which is due to take place on Saturday 30th June.  The timesheet for the day is posted on the clubhouse noticeboard and members are asked to place their name on the sheet by no later than Wednesday 27th June.  A draw for partners will take place on Wednesday evening and times will be allocated within a half hour of your original time.

The Jimmy Bruen team headed to New Ross on Saturday last for their qualifying round.  While the weather hampered practice times the team performed well, however, they failed to qualify for the knockout stage on Sunday morning.  Next weekend sees the last chance saloon on the men’s interclub scene when the Senior Cup takes place in Rosslare Golf Club.  The midweek 9 hole competition continues this Wednesday and is proving very popular – last Wednesday evening saw an entry of over 55 competitors with Kevin Maher (14) taking first place with 23 pts.

The Open 3 Person Rumble on Sunday last 17th June, proved very successful with a full time sheet in place throughout the day.  Michael Green, Tim Buckley and Trevor Browne, all visitors from Waterford GC,  took the leading spot with 87 points and were delighted with their first prize of digital cameras.  Second place went to Mick Lane (Gowran Park), Kieran Fitzgerald (Gowran Park) and Joe O’Brien (Newbridge) with 85 points, while Pat Kirwan (Gowran Park). Larry Gittens (Kilkenny) and D. Dowling (Rathdowney) took third place with 82 points.  There will be another Open 3 Person Tea Event on Sunday 1st July.   The timesheet is now open at 056 7726699 and early booking is advisable.  Another date for your diary is the Intermediate Scratch Cup scheduled for Sunday 15th July.

Juniors:

Under 15 Leinster InterClub Matchplay

The under 15 juniors took part in the Leinster Inter Club Matchplay last week when they defeated a very good  Mount Juliet side in a thrilling match by 3 games to 2. Both sides played some great golf in what were extremely testing conditions and credit must go to the greenkeeping staff for making the course playable and allowing the match to be played.

Of the 7 matches played, 3 finished on the 17th hole, 3 on the 18th hole and the other match went to the 19th for a result.  First out was Ciaran Whelan, who was playing in his first competitive match, and he showed great composure in beating his opponent on the 18th. James Bergin got off to a great start by winning the first 3 holes, however, he was brought back to level at the turn, and it was a great battle on the back nine to remain level after 18 holes. On the 19th James kept his nerve to record a great victory. In the 3rd match Sean Roche was never ahead against a very good opponent, but put in a fighting performance on the back 9 and would have levelled the match on the 18th but for a great putt by the Mount Juliet junior.

In the next match Sean Carey put on a great display of driving and came from 2 down to win his match on the last hole. In the 5th game Matt Kenny had a great battle with the Mount Juliet number one player. He was 3 down early on in the match and recovered to go 2 up by the 12th. In a very high class game he just lost out on the 17th hole. The first reserve Gareth Graham, who conceded 4 strokes to his opponent, was in great form and recorded his first win for the club with one hole to spare.  First timer Thomas Dowling showed great promise before being edged out on the 17th hole.  Gowran Park has two matches to play in this competition, a home fixture against Carlow G.C. on Friday 22nd June and an away match to be arranged against Coollattin G.C.
Junior Competition Results – Monday 11th June

9 Hole Fourball (back 9) – 1st – Sean Roche (16) & Judy Dick (16) – 22pts

9 Hole Singles (front 9)  – 1st Sean Roche (16) – 24pts
